Gonorrhea is a bacterial STD caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae that can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat. Like chlamydia, it often coexists with other STDs, and dual testing is recommended.
Treatment requires an injectable antibiotic (ceftriaxone) due to widespread resistance to oral medications. Test of cure (retesting after treatment) is strongly recommended. Reinfection is common without partner treatment.
